Brushwood Nursery has been known for many years to provide high quality plants to gardeners across the country. All of our plants are grown right here at our nursery in southeastern Pennsylvania. Most pictures shown in the catalog are of the actual mother plants we use for stock.
Our plants are grown from cuttings, not seed (except the few noted), and none are grafted. This assures that you will get a healthy plant that is true to name.
Here is a picture of some actual plants
as they would be shipped to you. Each will be in a quart size pot with
a label and stake. All will be trimmed below the top of the stake for
shipping and to promote branching. Some varieties have small leaves
and many branches at this size. Others, like hybrid Clematis may only
have a few sets of leaves due to their size and habit of growth.

When your plants arrive, you'll find them packed carefully
with natural materials. Each plant will be individually wrapped. Planting
instructions can be found right here on the web site. You may also come
back to the web site to find more planting and growing information on
each plant. Please note: The stake is used to stabilize the plant in transit as much as to tie it up. Every plant will be shorter than its stake. Some may be far shorter than the stake depending on variety and recent trimming. We have just switched to a much longer stake. This will allow us to leave an average of twice as much top growth as before but many plants will still ship far shorter than the top of the stake.

As you saw above, different varieties of climbers will
have unique growth habits and will look different when shipped to you.
This is also true for the root systems. Some roots will be white while
others will be tan. Some, like hybrid Clematis, are naturally tan with
white tips. Most Clematis roots will form at the bottom of the pot.
This is natural for them. The root systems shown on the left are both
healthy and normal for their types.

Just a note about our Roses: We often hear customers comparing
our Rose plants to bare-root plants shipped while dormant. We feel there
is a great advantage to growing ours because they arrive actively growing
in their own soil. Also, they are not grafted like most field grown Roses.
There is no chance of a graft union failure and you'll never have to
deal with rootstock shoots and their ugly flowers with our plants. Own-root
Roses like ours are considered far better in the long run even if they
don't look as impressive right out of the box.
