Clematis viorna is the namesake of a group of native clematis. Most of them also share the common name Leather Flower. They are generally distributed in the southeast and lower midwest states but examples can be found even on the Rocky Mountains. Our selection of viorna comes from our friend Miguel who discovered it growing near his home in the piedmont of North Carolina. It has proved to be a strong plant that readily blooms all summer for us with fat reddish purple bells over an inch long. Large, attractive seed heads follow the blooms for a great textural interest. The open habit of this pretty vine looks especially great growing through shrubs. Grown from seed. Pruning: 3
